the learn-to-earn approach is interesting if the "learning" is inspired by apprenticeships models, where you're getting "paid" to learn but you're also building/contributing to a larger project. learn-to-earn seems less appealing if it just becomes an new version of gamified learning.

great point! The length of the reward mechanism matters here: if you reward learning based on short-term goals (did you remember this fact, etc.) that aren't connected to a longer term goal (get a job, understand a subject, support others), the intrinsic motivator won't translate into higher motivation to learn (/accomplish that hard goal!)

I am also worried about learn to earn. I am trying to combine a students learning with a purpose in their life so they are intrinsically motivated. I think we need a combo of both external and internal, but anytime you through money into an equation it makes it much more complicated.

good point. I see it as crossing a chasm from the extrinsic to the intrinsic -> can you sequence extrinsic motivators in a way that help drive longer term intrinsic motivation? that's hard to make! and requires a bit of both

I'm so curious where this is going. I'm trying to think how to apply this model to lifelong learning that is not tech related.
